Biography

MILDRED McMILLEN      (1884-1940)

 

Mildred McMillen was a founding member of the Provincetown Printers, a pioneering group of woodblock artists.  She is known for her large-scale black and white prints (in contrast to the white-line color woodblock prints of her local contemporaries).   Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1884, McMillen studied art at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago.  There she met fellow artist Ada Gilmore and later moved to Paris and then Provincetown with Gilmore in 1914. Other Provincetown Printers known for their white-line woodblock prints including Ada Gilmore, Blanche Lazzell, Ethel Mars, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Maud Hunt Squire.
